Jean Paul Gaultier Ultra Male - Review

 The Clubbing King!

Before we proceed to the review itself, I got a confession to make: The first time I smell this, I was at my local Sephora and all I remember was thinking: "Aww this is so good but not really my style." Like every noob in the fragrance world, people with little experience tend to prefer fresh and clean fragrances. In my case, I gave one more chance and this one was the first sweet fragrance that I fell in love with. When I fell in love with this one, I was not familiar with the original one JPG Le Male. After a few months of wearing this, I started to love the JPG fragrance lineup, and despite the poor performance of the original, I love it and it's my favorite fougére by far. 

In the first minutes of spraying, JPG Ultra Male opens with a sweet combo of pear and vanilla with fresh bergamot to balance the sweetness. This to me, is a very unusual sweet fragrance with a high uniqueness factor. There aren't many sweet/night time fragrances with a pear vibe. For the fans of the original Le Male, I suggest giving this one a try since the Le Male DNA is very recognizable in Ultra Male. Since this is a sweeter take on the original, just don't expect to be a versatile fragrance like the original. This doesn't have a balance fresh/sweet like the original has (it´s mostly sweet/powdery). However, if used in the right situation, JPG Ultra Male will work wonders for you! 

After a little while, the cinnamon note sinks in and binds with the vanilla making an addictive dry down. 

The character of this fragrance is 100% playful/sexy/party mode/fun time. This is not a professional scent by any means and it´s not appropriate for the office. In case you do wear this one at the office, people will probably tell you that you smell like cake! 

Compliments, Longevity, and Projection

I gotta be honest with this one. Jean Paul Gaultier Ultra Male is one of my most complimented fragrances of all time. Since I don't go clubbing often, this one works magic when I go to dates that involve outdoor activities. This is my dumb reach for when I want to have fun. Social events, clubbing, dates, concerts... You name it! Women just fall in love with Ultra Male. However, you need to have the confidence to pull this one off. If you are a reserved guy, then this is not for you. You need to be a social guy when wearing this one, otherwise, it´s an awkward scent.

Despite of the reformulations that ultra male has been through (now made by PUIG), in terms of longevity, Jean Paul Gaultier Ultra Male still works strong for me (not beast mode thought). On average, I get 7 hours on my skin (with 5 spray routine) with a solid 2 hours moderate/heavy projection before it turns in to a skin scent. For me, 7 hours is more than enough for any typical date and social event, so I would say not to worry about performance with this one.

Should I Buy JPG Ultra Male Or Versace Eros?

This is probably the most asked question that I get when someone looks for advice on a clubbing fragrance. Even for me, it´s a hard question to answer since I love both fragrances.

Taking all factors into consideration, for me, JPG Ultra Male gets the win on this topic. Both fragrances work for the same situations, the price is very similar between the two, similar performance and a similar amount of compliments.

In my personal opinion, when we consider the uniqueness factor is where Ultra Male shines. We all want to smell different and unique, and I really don't think that Versace Eros can give you that feeling. The mint/apple combination that Versace Eros offers can be found in other fragrances on the market and it doesn't bring anything new or exciting.

This will always have a special place in my heart, and I firmly believe this one is the best party fragrance out there.
